Vandalism Policy
Vandalism means the deliberate damage or defacement of Calgary Board of Education property including buildings, grounds, equipment (including desks), and electronic information resources.
Following an incident of damage, loss, destruction or conversion, the principal must ensure that an Accident/Vandalism Report is completed and that copies are forwarded to
- Security Monitoring Centre, and
- Insurance/Risk Management.
When Calgary Board of Education property has been deliberately or negligently damaged or destroyed by a student, and the student has been clearly identified, the principal must immediately inform parents or guardians of the student in writing,
- That the incident occurred, and
- That they will receive a claim for restitution when the costs of repair and/or replacement have been determined.
When carelessness on the part of a student results in damage to, or destruction of Calgary Board of Education property, and the studen has been clearly identified, the principal or designate must
- Immediately inform the parent or guardians of the student that the incident occurred,
- Request that Corporate Business Services provide an estimate of the cost to repair or replace the damage, and
- In consultation with the parents or guardian determine an appropriate percentage of the cost that is attributable to the student, taking into consideration the accidental nature of the damage.
Smoking, Vaping, Drugs & Alcohol, Gambling, and other prohibited activities
The premises of the Calgary Board of Education are designated as smoke-free environments at all times. Smoking and vaping are prohibited by law (within sight of the school). Matches, lighters or any other paraphernalia associated with smoking and vaping should not be brought to school.
Parents will be notified when a student is caught smoking and/or vaping during the school day.
Students face serious disciplinary action if they are:
- in possession of smoking and/or vaping materials, alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia or any product that might promote drinking, smoking or vaping
- under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- knowingly in the company of others who possess or are using drugs or alcohol and smoking and/or vaping
- distributing alcohol or drug, smoking and/or vaping to other students
- gambling in any way
Please note that community activities with inappropriate use of illicit substances that impact the climate of the school are also subject to disciplinary intervention. As with any behavior that involves criminal activity, the school resource officer may be involved. Parents are notified. Disciplinary action will be taken, up to and including suspension.
