Checking Out or In During School Day

If students must leave the school due to illness, appointment, or other reason, they are to check out at the main office and provide a note from their parent. Similarly, if students arrive after the late bell, they must first check into the main office and receive a late slip to present to the receiving teacher.

Supervision

Supervision at school is between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., unless the student is involved in a teacher-sponsored activity (for example: - sports teams, drama practice, homework club).

IMPORTANT: Please note - If students are at the school before 7:45 a.m. or after 2:45 p.m. and not involved in a teacher-sponsored activity, supervision is not provided, and the doors remain closed.

  • Note: Students must make driving arrangements with parents BEFORE signing up for extracurricular activities.

Emergency Communication Blackout

In the event of an emergency or critical incident, students will follow administrators' and teachers' direction to observe a communication blackout until the emergency is resolved. This may include students giving their devices to a teacher during the incident.

Fire & Safety Drills

Periodic fire drills provide students with practice in clearing the building safely and quickly. The fire drill signal is a loud, continuous ring. At this signal you are to evacuate the building immediately, following the directions posted in each classroom, and line up outside for attendance. Remain outside until the signal to return inside has been given and attendance has been completed. Other types of drills are practiced for emergency situations, for which specific instructions will be given.

Parent Volunteers

We welcome and encourage parents’ involvement and help in the office, library, sports teams, computer lab, classrooms, field trips, etc. Research shows that students whose parents are involved in different aspects of school life achieve more in school. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time, please call the school. Having a volunteer coordinator would be a great asset to our school. If interested in that position, please contact the office in September. We require that you have a current police check conducted for the Calgary Board of Education, but if you have had one completed at another school within the past 5 years, you do not need another.

Visitors

Any visitors must first report to the main office, sign the Visitor Book and receive a visitor pass that must be worn in such a way that it is visible to others. Parents and other relatives must also report to the main office before meeting students. This helps us to keep the school safe for everyone.

Personal Messages

Students will not be called out of class for personal messages unless it is deemed an emergency or crisis. Messages will be communicated to students at class time change, or at lunchtime by paging the student to the office. We will do our best to help you to pass information to your child, but we will also try not to interrupt classes unless it is absolutely necessary.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
